Found a to play on and need to download the client to get started? Look no further! Here we have a guide to not only downloading but also configuring it to connect to your private server. Remember, don’t use the launcher to start the game, make sure you use Wow.exe inside the World of Warcraft folder otherwise it can start updating the game and making you start all over.
Update: Due to multiple reports of people having issue with the original client install, here are some additional download options. 1) Get the WotLK Client (6.35GB) – You can find the original client full download on FilePlanet, a much safer alternative than using a torrent which could have been modified in some way.
The client comes in a zip file, you can use a built in zip extractor or a third party program such as 7zip. 2) Install the game Remember where you installed the game as we’ll be going there later. When the installation finishes it will begin to try and install newer patches of the game, make sure to cancel this immediately to avoid any issues. Additionally, you should delete the desktop icon that was created as it will run the launcher instead of Wow.exe as noted above. 3) Update your realmlist.wtf file Browse to the folder where you installed the game, from there go into Data and then there should be a subfolder based upon your language such as enUS or enGB. For example in my case it’s: D: Games WoW 3.3.5 Data enUS. Delete everything and add the realmlist information for the private server you’re wanting to play on.
This can be generally found on their website, additionally, we also list all realmlist data for the servers listed here at DKPminus. For example if you check our entry you’ll see that your realmlist.wtf file should be empty except for: set realmlist logon.warmane.com 4) Update the client to 3.3.5a – Now that you have the game installed and the client setup properly you need to update the client to the version that almost all private servers use. To update to 3.3.5a you will need to start with this page that lists all the patches that were made during WotLK and provides mirrors for you to download them. As a note, patches must be applied in order from lowest version to highest.
3.x.x → 3.2.0. 3.2.0 → 3.2.0a. 3.2.0a → 3.2.2. 3.2.2 → 3.2.2a. 3.2.2a → 3.3.0. 3.3.0 → 3.3.0a.
3.3.0a → 3.3.2. 3.3.2 → 3.3.3. 3.3.3 → 3.3.3a.
3.3.3a → 3.3.5. 3.3.5 → 3.3.5a 5) All done! Fire it up (with Wow.exe) and get playing! Assuming you’ve already registered an account at the server of your choice, you should be all set to launch the game and get going. Post navigation. Won’t work at all for me on a couple Microcrap Winblows 7 Ultimate 64-bit secondary PC’s I’ve got. It launches, but then stops almost instantly, saying it “cannot initialize streaming”.
Wow 3.3.5a Patch
Checked ports, and allowed it through the Windows firewall – nothing. Can’t even get close to the updater part you have to keep an eye out for & stop.
Installation won’t even start. Pretty sure it’s a Microsoft update problem in Windows 7 and later. Heard it works fine on Mac OSX, and I have absolutely no problem whatsoever in “Wine+PoL” in Linux. Arch Linux, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, and RedHat all work great. Maybe it’s a security update that Blizzard worked with Microsoft on to discourage private-server play?

Anyone know a way around this?

You don't use the retail version to play on back versions of wow(example: Wrath 3.3.5a, TBC 2.4.3, etc.) You play the version of wow at that release 2.4.3 copy or 3.3.5a copy. To obtain those you have to browse around the private server scene and find the server you want to play on.
Usually, that server provides a link(torrent) to d/l the content to play that particular version of wow on their private server. You also, always, keep a seperate folder for your private server's version from your retail version. Okay from the looks of it you are very new to this stuff one does not simply 'install' a private server unless you're trying to make one. Which is an entirely different ball-park then what I am about to tell you.
If you want more information on that just ask first off, decide which expansion you want to play. I recommend you do not play private servers for MoP/wod as they are still terribly buggy. You can get a client from thepiratebay the fastest, and your torrent client can be anything but I recommend picking up qbittorrent. Then you can look in the sidebar for server suggestions there, all of them are different.
To answer your 'no realmlist' question, Blizzard has indeed gotten rid of their realmlist in the past few years for newer expacs to slight private server owners. To play newer expacs on private servers you will need a modified wow.exe which is provided by private servers.
You cannot use a 6.2 client, the one provided by blizzard, to play on a private server that isn't hosting 6.2. To put it more simply, you will need to get a 3.3.5a client (wotlk) to play on a 3.3.5a server, and a 1.12.1 client to play on any 1.12.1 server (vanilla).
Chenger I hear you can Log onto EU servers from the US just by changing Realmlist info. Is it a possible action? Or is it against ToU in some way?
You used to be able to do that in the realmlist.wtf file, but that changed a while back ago. There might be a way to still do it, but that is not supported by us, and it may cause patching issues. If you play on both US and EU servers, your best bet would be to have both clients installed in different directories. I'm available Monday through Friday from 11AM to 8PM Pacific Time.
04:39 PMPosted by Thats the thing, I dont have a realmlist.wtf file to change the info. Barthus means there's possibly cvar lines you can add to the config.wtf that lets you over ride the default realm server settings.
Unforunately I don't actually know what those are and if you also need to set the locales as well (requiring changes in agent.db) Has something about a realmList cVar but I'm not sure what the setting is for EU. You'll have to do some experimentation yourself. Take appropriate backups before starting tho.
I don't like to make many assumptions, but OP, what exactly did you need that file for? The only thing I can imagine using it for would be to tell the game to connect to an illegal private server. Which is illegal. And a bad idea.
Kaskade. When released the first single '' it immediately showed a clear change of artistic direction for her music.
If you want to log into the EU servers with a US client, or vice-versa, editing the realmlist is something one can do. But yes, private servers are very bad. OP, if that is what you did and the reason you are having a problem with the realmlist file, I would also HIGHLY suggest you scan your computer for viruses and trojans. The activities surrounding illegal servers are notorious for spreading them. 09:35 AMPosted by I would imagine it's also not allowed, but is there actually any official word on this? It's allowed. Just not supported.

1. First of all, you must create an account. The account is used to log into both the game and our website. To open the registration page. 2. Install World of Warcraft.
You can download it (legally) from here:. Make sure to upgrade to our current supported patch, which is 3.3.5 (build 12340). Patch mirrors can be found. 3. Open up the 'World of Warcraft' directory. The default directory is 'C: Program Files World of Warcraft'. When you've found it, open up the directory called 'data', then go into the directory called either enUS or enGB, depending on your client language.
4. Open up the file called 'realmlist.wtf' with a text editor such as Notepad. To do this, you must right click on the file and choose properties, then select notepad as the default software for files with the '.wtf' ending. You may also just start the text editor and drag the file into the edit window. 5. Erase all text and change it to.
